What we produce

We provide free, high-quality health information to support people living with a lung condition, their families and carers.

We have information and advice about a wide range of different topics that are important to people affected by lung conditions. You can:

How we develop our health information

Our team of experienced Health Advice editors and writers are responsible for creating and updating all our health information. They follow the highest standards to make sure our information is easy to use, up-to-date, based on the latest evidence, medically accurate and relevant to people with lung conditions. 

The language we use

We want everyone to find our information easy to use and understand. To do this we:

  • use plain English
  • explain medical or technical language
  • use short, simple sentences
  • make sure the key messages are clear
  • use pictures and diagrams to support the text
  • use gender-inclusive language and talk to our readers as ‘you’ to help everyone feel included. 

We keep our information up to date

All our information is reviewed and updated at least every three years, or sooner if guidance changes.

We make sure our information is medically correct

Our information is reviewed and approved by qualified healthcare professionals and subject matter experts to make sure it's medically safe and accurate. This process is overseen by Asthma + Lung UK’s Clinical Lead, Dr Andy Whittamore and the Head of Health Advice.

We involve people with lung conditions

All our information is checked and reviewed by people with lung conditions to make sure it's relevant to their experiences and easy to use. We regularly speak to people with lung conditions to understand what information they need.

We are independent

We're committed to providing independent and trustworthy health information to support people affected by lung conditions. This means we maintain full editorial control for all our health information. As a charity, we sometimes accept funding from different donors, including commercial organisations. When we work with pharmaceutical companies, we follow the ABPI Code of Conduct. We never allow any donor to write, edit or influence our health information.

Artificial intelligence (AI)

We don't use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to write or translate our health information.

We're proud to say our health information has been awarded the Patient Information Forum’s PIF TICK certification. This means you can feel confident our health information is reliable, accurate and trustworthy.

  • based on the latest reliable research, evidence and clinical guidelines
  • updated regularly to ensure it remains accurate and up-to-date

  • created together with people affected by lung conditions
  • written in an accessible and inclusive way, so the information is easy to use and meets the needs of everyone.

We're assessed every year by the Patient Information Forum to make sure the information we produce continues to meet their quality standards.

Accessible information and formats

Lung conditions affect everyone, so we work hard to create health information that can help as many people as possible. This includes people and communities who are more at risk of experiencing health inequalities.

We follow accessibility and readability guidelines to make sure our website, booklets and resources are clear and easy to use. We also understand that people need to access health information in different ways, so we provide:

  • digital health information on our website which is easy to read, find and print
  • free booklets and resources that you can print, download or order
  • videos with subtitles and transcripts
  • photos, diagrams and infographics with alternative text descriptions
  • a range of information in different languages
  • easy read information
  • information in large print. Please contact our Supporter Care Team at info@asthmaandlung.org.uk if you need information in large print.
  • expert advice from our Helpline team who you can speak to about your lung condition.

How you can help

People affected by lung conditions are at the heart of all the information we produce and there are different ways you can help us.

Join our Readers Panel

All our information is checked and reviewed by people with lung conditions to make sure it's relevant, inclusive and easy to use. If you'd like to help read and review our information, please contact us as healthadvicequeries@asthmaandlung.org.uk

You don’t need any experience or qualifications, just an understanding of what it’s like to live with a lung condition. We welcome people from all backgrounds to join our panel, so our information represents a diverse range of perspectives.
