Guidelines for participating in our support group sessions

Our sessions are designed to give you the opportunity to try something you may not have been able to try before. They may involve moderate exertion, so it is important that you consider your own physical well-being so you don't put yourself at risk. We encourage you to talk to your GP before attending to ensure the activity is right for you.

Our practitioners are fully qualified to deliver on-line respiratory sessions and will encourage you to listen to your body, take regular breaks and always seek medical attention if you don't feel right. There is always a member of the team checking in with everyone during the sessions.

Some of our sessions involve physical activity. If you have any doubt as to the suitability of these sessions please consult your health care professional, especially if you have recently had surgery and do not take part in physical activities if you have recently had a flare up.

Some of the activities we do at these sessions may make some people feel breathless. This is entirely normal. Being a little bit more breathless than normal is necessary for improving your fitness. However, exercise should not hurt. Pain during an exercise (beyond any aches and pains that are normal for you) means you should stop that activity.

STOP if you get any sudden unpleasant symptoms including:

  • chest pain or tightness that is either new for you, or not relieved by your Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) if you use it
  • feeling dizzy, nauseous, clammy or cold
  • feeling increasingly wheezy
  • general extreme fatigue
  • weakness in an arm or leg that is more than just a tired muscle

Get advice from your GP or another health care professional if you experience any of the above or call 999 in an emergency.
