This isn’t just a season. This is life + breath.
If you have a lung condition, your risk of ending up in A&E doubles in winter. Stay well with our free, personalised guide to protect your lungs.
Imagine you couldn't breathe this winter
If you're living with a lung condition, winter can be a scary, dangerous time. People with lung conditions are much more likely to end up seriously ill over winter as seasonal triggers like cold weather, colds, coughs, flu and damp and mould can make it harder to breathe. In fact, for those of us with a lung condition we are twice as likely to go into A+E over the winter than we are at any point in the year.
Cold weather isn't just inconvenient, it can be life-threatening
- Last year, (2023-24), hospital admissions for asthma were 117% higher in the winter than they were during summer.
- The number of hospital admissions for COPD was 78% higher over the winter than in summer. (2023-24)
- There’s a 130% increase in deaths for respiratory conditions in winter (NHSE monthly hospital admissions data 2022/23).
- People with asthma are twice as likely to die over winter as they are in the summer.
- 90% of flu deaths happen over winter.
This isn't just 'a bit of mould'
Everyone's triggers are different: some of us living with a lung condition might be worried about getting seriously ill with a virus like the common cold, or the flu and this can make us struggle to breathe. For others, it might be living in a damp or mouldy home that triggers your lung condition and makes it harder to breathe.
For people with breathing problems, this isn’t just a season. This is life + breath.
Having a lung condition during winter is like having a full-time job. The cold weather and viruses have a massive effect on my health and leave me struggling to breathe.
