£3.5 million invested in vital research

Our achievements in: Research

Thanks to your support, we invested £3.5 million into vital research in 2024 to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat lung conditions.

This includes Dr Steven Cass’s research into why certain white blood cells can trigger deadly COPD flare-ups. Dr Cass’s research could help find new treatments to stop COPD symptoms from worsening – stopping millions of people from struggling to breathe.

In June, Professor James Chalmers found the world’s first potential treatment for bronchiectasis. Support like yours helped to power James’s pioneering research for over a decade, leading him to secure further external funding to run a clinical trial. This led to the discovery of a new bronchiectasis drug, which could be available by 2026.

Professor James Chalmers

Since I began working in bronchiectasis, I’ve done everything I possibly can to raise the profile of the disease and to bring new investigators and scientists into the field. It’s so exciting to see the progress we’re achieving and it's only thanks to the generous donations of Asthma + Lung UK supporters.
